2017 major employers survey results released

Mar 6, 2018
Lethbridge, AB- Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL) has released the results of its biennial major employer survey.

In the fall of 2017, EDL contacted local businesses and organizations across various sectors to compile a list of businesses employing more than 100 people. According to the 2017 survey, there are 49 major employers located in the Lethbridge area, up from 45 in the 2015 survey. This change is largely the result of the inclusion of both businesses in the city of Lethbridge as well as those in the surrounding area, including Coaldale, Coalhurst and Picture Butte, but excluding Fort McLeod and Taber.

“Expanding the scope of the survey better captures Lethbridge’s role as a hub for the region’s economy and employment,” says Economic Development Lethbridge CEO Trevor Lewington. “This study also offers a more accurate picture of the overall business diversity in the region and provides us with valuable information on trends in employment by sector.”

The 49 businesses captured in the survey employ a total more than 21,400 people, approximately 35  per cent of the area’s employed workforce. The top 10 employers, nine of which are in the public sector, employ 13,142 people, or 21  per cent of the area’s workforce. This is relatively unchanged from previous years and highlights the strong and important role of the public sector in Lethbridge.

While the public sector remains the largest employer in the region, its growth has been outpaced by that of the private sector. There, the agri-food sector leads the way with a 24 per cent increase from 2015, while the manufacturing and retail sectors remained mostly steady.

“This survey helps give us a sense of the extent to which the local economy is shaped by major employers,” says Lewington. “At the same time, this survey tells us that Lethbridge’s economy includes a diverse mix of large employers and small and medium-sized businesses. That diversity is one of the reasons for Lethbridge’s continued economic strength and stability.”

Results, which are based on those major employers who chose to participate, are available on our website.

Please note that Trevor Lewington will be available for comments on Tuesday, March 6 between 10 a.m. and noon. Please contact the EDL office at 403-331-0022.
