Lethbridge, AB… IndigiTech Destiny, in partnership with Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL), The Regional Innovation Network of Southern Alberta (RINSA), ElevateIP Alberta, and Lethbridge Polytechnic, is proud to announce the pilot launch of the Indigenous Youth Film Training Program: Writing, Storytelling, and Producing. This transformative initiative aims to equip Indigenous youth with vital skills and knowledge to thrive in the creative industries, running from August 9-11 with a culturally enriched and comprehensive curriculum.

“This initiative offers a platform for Indigenous youth to unleash their creativity and build critical skills in filmmaking,” said Renae Barlow, VP Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Economic Development Lethbridge. “We are dedicated to creating an environment where these young storytellers can flourish and significantly impact the creative industry, whether as entrepreneurs or in professional careers.”

Program Overview:
The Indigenous Lens: Youth Film Training Program is an immersive, three-day course covering key aspects of filmmaking, including writing, storytelling, and production management. Participants will engage in practical exercises, learn from seasoned Indigenous filmmakers, and collaborate on producing short narrative and documentary films.

Barry Morrisette and Winona Lafreniere of IndigiTech Destiny emphasized the program’s importance: “Bringing this program to Lethbridge as a pilot project is a major step toward empowering Indigenous youth and supporting their development in the film industry. This initiative will create future opportunities and cultivate a vibrant community of Indigenous storytellers.”

Brock Skretting, Director of Creative Industries, EDL, highlighted the regional impact: “This program’s potential is significant. By nurturing local talent, we are not only celebrating cultural diversity but also planting the seeds of Lethbridge and Southwest Alberta as a creative industry hub. Indigenous filmmaking is a growth opportunity worth investing in – It exemplifies our commitment to inclusivity and innovation.”

Jason Donkersgoed of Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Multimedia program added, “Hosting this event aligns perfectly with our mission to provide students with practical, real-world experiences. We are excited to support this initiative and anticipate the remarkable work these young filmmakers will produce.”
