Health Services

Residents of Lethbridge benefit from the Albertan and Canadian healthcare systems – one of the world’s best. It is only possible because it is a taxpayer funded system that ensures everyone gets equal care. That is no easy task and governments regularly struggle with providing care while keeping the burden on the taxpayer as low as possible.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is responsible for providing acute hospital care, community/ public health services and continuing care for 150,000 residents. They operate 10 active treatment and/or continuing care hospitals, 15 Community Health sites and a Children’s Care Centre. Alberta Health Services brings together 12 separate entities in the province: nine regional health authorities and three provincial bodies working in the areas of mental health, addictions and cancer.

Ground ambulance service was moved from municipalities to AHS in April 2009. As Lethbridge offers integrated Fire and EMS service, an separate agreement between the City and AHS allows the City to continue to deliver these services.

In 2009, the Alberta Health System employed nearly 4,000 people from the BC border to Taber and South of Claresholm to the US border.

Lethbridge offers numerous high-quality medical services. The Chinook Regional Hospital is a community and regional referral hospital which employs more than 2,500 people at various locations throughout the city, making them the largest employer in Lethbridge. St. Michael’s Health Centre operates a 210-bed residential care facility with specialized palliative care services. Lethbridge has approximately 165 resident physicians and surgeons, 40 dentists, 30 chiropractors, two orthodontists and 15 optometrists.

  • Chinook Regional Hospital opened in 1988 at a cost of nearly $100 million and was the largest construction project in the city’s history. It provides 232 acute care beds. It serves both as a general hospital for Lethbridge and area and as a referral centre for Alberta Health Services.

    The Chinook Regional Hospital provides services including 24-hour emergency, obstetrics, surgery, acute geriatrics, mental health, acute care, acute geriatrics and intensive care. There is a major intensive-care unit, CAT scan, MRI, angiography, laproscopic surgery, high level neonatal intensive care unit, a number of clinics (eye, sleep apnea, asthma) and a comprehensive range of education, medical and non-medical support services. A modern cancer treatment facility is currently under construction and set to open in 2010.

    In 2009, the Chinook Regional Hospital provided services to citizens of Lethbridge as well as citizens of the communities throughout Southern Alberta for 18,385 inpatient admissions and 288,015 outpatient visits.

  • St. Michael’s Health Centre offers a multi-faceted range of rehabilitation, palliative and continuing care services within the southern Alberta. St. Michael’s currently meets the needs of 156 continuing care residents, 36 rehabilitation patients and 10 palliative care patients in a home-like environment in South Lethbridge.

Senior Citizens

Seniors of Lethbridge and area are very fortunate to have a wide array of accommodation options available. Independent and able seniors can live in homes, condo or apartment units all across the city. Home Care is available to seniors in need and allows seniors to remain in their home communities.

When supportive living becomes necessary, Seniors lodges can provide a standard of care able to meet most needs. Lethbridge also has a number of provincially funded facilities varying in size and location throughout the city and surrounding municipalities.

Assisted living facilities are available to provide housing and services for those who need extra assistance. Enhanced Assisted Living or Designated Assisted Living is an appropriate choice when the seniors’ health needs become greater.

Finally, seniors having complex care needs and requiring professional nursing care, Longterm Care is available. Seniors requiring Assisted Living Care or greater must be assessed to determine these levels of care.
